Varanadi kashayam is an Ayurvedic medicine for many diseases due to obstruction in channels. It is effective from ovarian cyst to hypertension.

Benefits of Varanadi kashayam

It liquifies the waste products accumulated in channels. It helps lower bad cholesterol and hyperlipidaemia.

It is used in almost all the diseases of head including sinusitis, migraine, nasal polyps, ear infections, deafness and tumours in the brain.

It improves the digestive fire. It is useful in indigestion, low appetite, fatigue and laziness, heaviness of the body, excessive and uncontrolled sleep etc. Many digestive problems like distension and pain of abdomen, bloating and belching, sluggish digestion etc are cleared with this formulation.

As it is Kaphahara it is used in many diseases of head as it is the seat of Kapha. In many types of headache, sinusitis, nasal polyps and growths it is found beneficial.

It absorbs the excess moisture in body and reduce swelling. It is used to treat visceral oedema and abscesses inside the and outside the body. It is used to treat ovarian cysts, uterine growths, and other diseases in female reproductive system.

It is used in stiffness of hip and lower limb, difficulty in walking etc

It is used in the treatment of Hypertension. Helps to reduce atherosclerotic changes.

It is used in the treatment of heart diseases especially kapha-vaata vitiated conditions.

Indications of Varanadi kashayam

Kapha                 – Vitiated Kaphadosha, conditions with indigestion and water retention.

Medodosha       – Deranged fat metabolism, hyperlipidaemia, obesity

Mandagnitwa   – Poor appetite, low digestive fire.

Adhyavatam      – Stiffness of thighs and lower limbs.

Sirassoolam       – Headache

Gulmam             -Indigestion with pain and distension of abdomen

Antarvidradhi   -Abscesses formed inside the body

Ingredients of Varanadi kashayam

Three leaved caper, Holy garlic pear Varana Crataeva nurvala

 It is a diuretic herb used in renal diseases. It stimulates digestion and helps in relieving abdominal pain and flatulence.

Strobilanthes Sairyaka Strobilanthes kunthiana

It is used against neurological disorders, sciatica, glandular swellings and oedema.

Wild asparagus Satavari

 

Asparagus racemosus

 It has anti-oxidants and immuno-stimulants.  It has anti-inflammatory, anti-hepatotoxic, anti-bacterial, anti-oxytocic, and reproductive agents.

Ceylon leadwort Dahana Plumbago zeylanica L.

 

 It aids digestion and increases appetite. It has anti-inflammatory and anti-cancerous properties. It can also be used in liver diseases.

Rajmahal hemp Morata

 

Marsdenia tenacissima(Roxb.)Moon.

 It is anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory. It is used in the treatment of abscesses, asthma, bronchitis, tonsillitis, cystitis, skin diseases, pneumonia etc. It is effective in food and drug poisoning. It is an anti-cancerous drug. 

Indian bael    Bilwa Aegle marmelos

 It has anti-inflammatory properties and it is effective in peptic ulcer. It is anti-diarrhoeal, anti-diabetic and anti-microbial. Being a part of Dasamoola (group of roots of Ten plants) it helps to enhance its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.

Worm killer Vishaanika Aristolochia bracteolate LAM.

 As the name suggests, it has remarkable anthelmintic action.

Indian nightshade  Brihati Solanum indicum

It has anti-oxidants. It also has anti-cancerous, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, immune-modulatory, neuroprotective, diaphoretic, expectorant and stimulant properties. 

Yellow-berried nightshade Kantakari Solanum xanthocarpum

It has anti-oxidant and anti-cancer activities. It possesses anti-asthmatic, hypoglycaemic, hepatoprotective, anti-bacterial and insect repellent properties. 

Indian beech tree Karanja Pongamia glabra

 It has anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, and wound-healing properties.

Indian elm Chiruvilwa/Pootikaranja Holoptelea integrifolia

It has anti-diabetic, anthelmintic and wound healing properties. It is beneficial in healing haemorrhoids. 

Headache tree    Agnimantha Premna integrifolia Linn.

 It has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antinociceptive, anti-arthritic, anti-bacterial, anti-cancerous, anti-microbial, anthelmintic, immuno-modulatory, hypoglycaemic, neuro-protective, and anti-ulcer properties. It is a CNS depressant, Cardiac stimulant, and cardio-protective.

Chebulic myrobalan

 

Abhaya Terminalia chebula RETZ. & WILLD.

It is one of the main drugs in Ayurveda, one of the Rasayana and a member of an important group, Triphala. It is used in a wide variety of diseases as it possesses anti-bacterial anti-fungal anti-viral anti-diabetic anti-mutagenic anti-oxidant anti-ulcer and wound-healing properties.

Drumstick Bahalapallava Moringa oleifera

 Its highly nutritional, a rich source of natural vitamins and minerals. It improves blood circulation to the joints. As it contains a lot of Vitamin A, it is beneficial in treatment of many eye diseases especially night blindness. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and antibiotic properties. It is useful in bone health and muscular health. 

Halfa grass Darbha Desmostachia bipinnata

 It is a coolant. Used in the treatment of heroes, burning sensation, leucorrhoea, excess thirst, urinary infection, urinary calculus and diseases of urinary bladder. 

Marking nut Rujakara Semecarpus anacardium L.F.

 It is anti-atherogenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-microbial, CNS stimulant, hypoglycaemic, anti-carcinogenic, and hair growth promoter.

Details of the manufacturing

 As already discussed, Varanadi kashayam has 16 ingredients in equal parts.

All the ingredients should be washed well and dried up in shade.

Take all the ingredients in crushed form in an earthen pot. Now add 16 times clean water into it. Make it boil and then cook in the open vessel with low fire. Reduce the quantity into one by eighth of the initial quantity. Make sure to mix it in between with a ladle. Also, the fire should be kept low to make sure that all the active ingredients in the herbs needed are absorbed well into the water. Once the quantity is reduced to one by eighth of the initial amount of water, remove the vessel from the fire. Squeeze and drain through a clean white cloth. Collect the decoction in a clean vessel and discard the solid waste. Drink the mild warm decoction.

Varanadi kashayam is Kapha-Medohara and rookshana

 Dosage and Usage of Varanadi kashayam

Dosage: two Pala.

Usage:

Kashayam is advised to take in empty stomach, once the ingested food is digested well and aahaararasa is formed well.

Usage of kashayam with prescribed prakshepadravyas according to the condition of disease and the patient gives the best results mostly.

As Varanadi combination is mentioned as a Gana, it can be used as any Kalpana (preparation) like kashaya, choorna,arishta, asava, ghrita or taila. Most famous and widely used formulation is Varanadi kashayam and ghrutam.

Exercises and Yoga.

As Varanadi kashayam targets mainly removing obstructions in channels, regular stretching and mild cardio exercises are advised. Also, specific yogacharya including naadisuddhi pranayama, bhujangaasana, pavanamuktasana is recommended.

Regular exercise helps improve the bioavailability of the medicine and food ingested and leads to positive health.

Yoga can maintain harmony within the body and with the surrounding system.

Recommended diet and behaviour

Diet:

  • To be avoided

Heavy meals and difficult to digest foods – cause indigestion.

junk foods- cause disturbance in digestion and reduces the bioavailability of the medicine

carbonated drinks – makes the stomach more acidic and disturbed digestion

refrigerated and frozen foods – causes weak and sluggish digestion by weakening Agni (digestive fire)

Milk and milk products – increase kapha and cause respiratory problems

curd – causes vidaaha and thereby many other diseases

Green gram, soups, honey

freshly cooked and warm food processed with cumin seeds, ginger, black pepper, ajwain etc

 Behaviour:

Protect yourself from cold climate.

Better to avoid exposure to excessive sunlight wind rain or dust.

Maintain a regular food and sleep schedule.

Avoid holding or forcing the urges like urine, faeces, cough, sneeze etc.

Avoid a sedentary lifestyle.
