Kumaryasavam is an Ayurvedic medicine for nourishment, urinary & renal diseases, urinary calculi, tuberculosis, and bleeding disorders. It is also used as an aphrodisiac.

Benefits of Kumaryasavam

It is useful in indigestion, loss of taste, intestinal parasites and other diseases of digestive system. It helps in bleeding disorders, ascites, swelling, etc.

It improves digestive & absorptive power in deficiency diseases and compromised immunity like tuberculosis. It is beneficial in bleeding due to intestinal parasites.

It is used in the treatment of almost all urinary tract diseases. It helps to dissolve and expel urinary calculi.

It is found beneficial in peptic ulcer, many types of ascites, epilepsy, memory loss etc.

It improves taste, digestion & absorption, reduces stomach discomforts, and relieves memory problems. Thus, it is a drug of choice in clinical depression and Alzheimer’s disease.

Being a nourishing formulation, it works as an aphrodisiac. It helps relieve azoospermia and other disorders of sperm & semen formation and ejaculation.  It is also beneficial in premature ejaculation & erectile dysfunction. It is used widely in infertility.

Ingredients of Kumaryasava 

Aloe vera Kumari Aloe barbadensis miller

It is used topically in the treatment of dermatological and wound healing conditions. The oral application of the Aloe vera latex is promoted as a laxative, whereas gel and whole-leaf oral preparations have been variously recommended for use as an adjunct to chemotherapy treatment and to ameliorate diverse disorders such as DM, infectious diseases, metastatic cancer, and ulcerative colitis. Studies showed that Aloe vera has been used to prevent skin ulcers and to treat burn wounds, postoperative wounds, cracked nipples, genital herpes, psoriasis, and chronic wounds including pressure ulcers.

Vyosha/Thrikaru

It is a group of three drugs namely,

Trikatu Churna is helpful in following health conditions.[36]

  • Constipation with mucous or sticky stool.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Indigestion.
  • Gas or flatulence.
  • Bloating.
  • Abdominal distension.
  • Irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Common cold (acute phase during running nose).
  • Cough with thin white phlegm.
  • Asthma (chest congestion due to phlegm).
  • Weight loss (obesity).
  • Body aches with feeling of heaviness in the body.
  • High cholesterol levels.
  • Atherosclerosis.
  • High blood pressure due to hypercholesterolemia
Dried ginger Sunthi Zingiber officinalis

It is unctuous and hot in potency with pungent taste but becomes sweet after digestion. It is an aphrodisiac and balances Vata and Kapha.

It improves ability to taste and promotes digestion. Relieves cough cold and other respiratory problems. It is not a laxative, rather causes constipation. 

Black pepper Maricha Piper nigrum L.

 Black Pepper is extremely useful for respiratory disorders and asthma. In conditions like hoarse voice, dental caries, in removing bad breadth (halitosis), the gargling of Black Pepper Powder along with salt and warm water may be used. Black pepper is also used in case of Heavy diets as it aids digestion. Black pepper is also used in the weakness and loosening of the anal sphincter especially in case of piles. For Headache and migraine, nasal drops of Black pepper powder prepared in milk is used. It helps to remove the chronic headache. The same preparation can also be used as local application on fore head in the form of paste. Black pepper reduces itching and discharge through the lesions when used in the form of local application on skin disorders. 

Long pepper Pippali Piper longum

It has carminative action and maybe used as appetizer. The fruit and root of Pippali are used in the form of powder to treat fever, diarrhoea, piles, cough, hiccough, asthma, hoarseness of voice, flatulence, colic, vomiting, acid gastritis, oedema, diseases of mouth, eye diseases, diseases of semen, diseases of women, jaundice, and earache.

Pippali mixed with honey alleviates cough, dyspnoea, fever splenomegaly, and hiccough.

 It has anti-oxidant, microbial, antinociceptive, anti-viral, anti-cancerous, and analgesic properties. It can prevent metastasis related to oxidative stress. It improves taste & digestion. It is useful in excessive thirst, vomiting, pain & distension of abdomen, colic pain, cough, breathing difficulties, hiccups, tuberculosis, emaciation etc. 

Chaturjata- Group of four aromatic herbs namely, 

Cinnamon/Dalchini Twak Cinnamomum zeylanicum

 It has anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-oxidant, and anti-diabetic properties. It helps lower the cholesterol levels in blood. It is used in vomiting, gastro-intestinal problems and breathing disorders. It can strengthen the heart muscles. 

Cardamom Ela Elettaria cardamomum (L.) Maton

 It can help in controlling asthma. It is beneficial in teeth and gum infections, cataracts, nausea, diarrhoea, as well as cardiac, digestive and kidney disorders. 

Indian bay leaf Tejapatra Cinnamomum tamala

It has gastro-protective properties. It enhances immune system, gastro-intestinal tract, and functions of liver. it has antioxidant, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, carminative, anthelmintic, diuretic and antimicrobial activity. It is used in colic, dyspepsia, and diarrhoea.

Indian rose chest nut/Ceylon ironwood/cobra’s saffron Nagakesara Mesua ferrea L.

 It clears kapha, it is beneficial in urinary tract infection, poisoning, rheumatoid arthritis, pruritus, and oedema. It is beneficial in the treatment of fever, excessive thirst, sweating, vomiting & nausea, bad body odour, skin diseases, herpes etc. It is useful in some types of headache. 

Ceylon leadwort Chitraka Plumbago zeylanica L.

It aids digestion and increases appetite. It has anti-inflammatory action. It can also be used in liver diseases. 

Long pepper – root Pippaleemoola Piper longum

It is pungent in taste and hot in potency. It breaks down thick sputum and is beneficial in sinusitis and asthma. It is also useful in the treatment of worm infestation, infected wounds, ascites, enlargement of abdomen, distension of abdomen, splenomegaly, asthma, tuberculosis and other chronic respiratory disorders. It improves taste and relieves anorexia. 

False black pepper Vidanga

 

Embelia ribes

It is an appetiser and mild laxative. It has carminative, stimulant, anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial, anti-cancerous and anthelmintic properties. 

Scindapsus Gajapippali

 

Scindapsus  officinalis  (ROXB.)  Schott

 It is used for erectile disorders, respiratory ailments (cough, bronchitis, pharyngitis, and asthma), worm infestation, dysentery, troubles of the throat, odema, rheumatism, arthritis and diarrhoea. It is also used as carminative, anthelmintic, cardiotonic, diaphoretic, antiprotozoal (fruit), and hypoglycaemic (stem and fruit).  It also has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-asthmatic, cytostatic and antimicrobial properties. 

Kaattu mulak   Chavya/ Chavika

 

Piper retrofactum Vahl.

 It is useful in treating indigestion, abdominal colic, worm infestation, poisoning, anorexia, productive cough, asthma, bronchitis, fever, diarrhoea, IBS, haemorrhoids, fistula, chronic respiratory disorders, throat disorders, and rheumatic conditions

Common juniper Hapusha Juniperus communis L.

Juniper berries or extract of the plant has traditionally been used as diuretic, anti-arthritis, anti-diabetes, antiseptic as well as for the treatment of gastrointestinal and autoimmune disorders. The essential oil and extracts of juniper have been experimentally documented to have antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal activities. Recent studies have also found anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, hypoglycaemic and hypolipidemic effects of berries.

Cilantro seeds Dhanyaka Coriandrum sativum Linn.

It is an anti-oxidant, anti-diabetic, diuretic, and anti-pyretic. It improves digestion and absorption; it is good for heart. 

Betel palm Kramuka Areca catechu Linn.

 It is an astringent and stimulant. It relieves hunger and abdominal discomfort. It kills and expels intestinal worms and parasites. It has diuretic and laxative properties. 

Yellow gentian, Hellebore Katurohini Picrorhiza kurroa

It is used for Dyspepsia, fever and in purgatives. Although it shows anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory activities, it is most valued for its hepatoprotective effect.

Coco grass, nut grass, purple nutsredge Musta Cyperus rotundus L.

It has marked anti-inflammatory action. It also has anthelmintic, antioxidant and antifungal properties. The drug improves lactation, relieves fever, burning sensation, and excessive thirst. It is also used in treating diarrhoea, dyspepsia and skin diseases. 

Thriphala-a group of 3 drugs namely,

Chebulic myrobalan Pathya Terminalia chebula RETZ. & WILLD.

It is one of the main drugs in Ayurveda, one of the Rasayana and a member of an important group, Triphala. It is used in a wide variety of diseases as it possesses anti-bacterial anti-fungal anti-viral anti-diabetic anti-mutagenic anti-oxidant anti-ulcer and wound-healing properties.

Beleric myrobalan, Bahera Aksha Terminalia bellirica (GAERTN.) ROXB.

A very good healer of gastric diseases, common cold, leukoderma and also cures digestive disorders. It has laxative and anti-inflammatory actions. It is one of the important ingredients in triphala an Ayurvedic preparation. Other properties for which it is used are as health tonic and as rejuvenator. It is used in treatment of piles also.

Amla, Indian gooseberry Dhatri Emblica officinalis GAERTN.

Amla exhibits strong antioxidant activity. It is one of the most important plants in the traditional Ayurvedic medical system as well as in other traditional health systems for immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, antiulcer and hepatoprotective actions. It is widely used for anti-diabetic effect.It is a part of the famous group of drugs called Thriphala. 

Siamese ginger Rasna Alpinia galanga (L.) WILLD

 

It is known to have anti-inflammatory and analgesic actions. It is one of the main ingredients of various formulations alleviating pain. 

Himalayan cedar  devadaru Cedrus deodara

It is useful as an expectorant in cough. It relieves asthma and other respiratory diseases by clearing the airways and enhancing the movements of respiratory tract.

It has anti-diabetic effect as it helps reduce high blood sugar levels in blood.

It helps to calm the mind and improves sleep quality. 

Turmeric

 

Haridra Curcuma longa L.

 

Turmeric is used to help with heartburn or bowel problems like diarrhoea, intestinal gas, and bloating. It is famous for its anti-cancerous and detoxification effects. It is widely used in skin diseases. Some may use it to help with memory problems or problems with the liver or gallbladder. It may also help to lessen swelling and help with signs of arthritis. It has marked anti-inflammatory and antiseptic action.

Indian barberry/chutro/tree turmeric Daruharidra

 

Berberis aristata

It has anti-bacterial, anti-fungal anti-diarrhoeal and anti-cancerous properties. It is used in the treatment of ophthalmic infections. 

Rajmahal hemp Moorva

 

Marsdenia tenacissima(Roxb.)Moon.

 It is anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory. It is used in the treatment of abscesses, asthma, bronchitis, tonsillitis, cystitis, skin diseases, pneumonia etc. It is effective in food and drug poisoning. It is an anti-cancerous drug.

Black grapes Madhurasa/Mridweeka/Draksha Vitis vinifera L.

Grapes are a nourishing and slightly laxative fruit that can support the body through illness, especially of the gastro-intestinal tract and liver. Because the nutrient content of grapes is close to that of blood plasma, grape fasts are recommended for detoxification. The fresh fruit is antilithic, constructive, cooling, diuretic and strengthening. The fruit is also helpful in the treatment of varicose veins, haemorrhoids and capillary fragility. The dried fruit is demulcent, cooling, mildly expectorant, laxative and stomachic. It has a slight effect in easing coughs. It is used as a remedy for skin diseases and in diseases of the eyes. 

Red physic nut Danti Baliospermum solanifolium (Burm.) Suresh

 It is a strong purgative. It has anthelmintic, diuretic and hepato-protective properties. It is used to treat pain, enlarged spleen, inflammations, jaundice, leukoderma, abdominal tumours, and cancer.

Indian elecampane Pushkaramoola Inula racemosa HOOK. F.

It is the drug of choice by many physicians in chronic respiratory conditions. It is an expectorant with anti-inflammatory, carminative, diuretic, and antiseptic properties. The plant is used in chronic bronchitis and rheumatism. Dried rhizomes and roots are used to cure loss of appetite and stomach problems. 

Flannel weed Bala Sida cordifolia Linn.

It is anti-pyretic, anti-inflammatory, contraceptive and anti-fungal activity. It is a tonic for strengthening nerves and muscles in various neuro motor diseases.

Country mallow Atibala Abutilon indicum Linn.

It has anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, hepato-protective, immuno-modulatory and larvicidal. In traditional medicine, it is used as an aphrodisiac, demulcent, diuretic, laxative, pulmonary and sedative (leaves). The bark is astringent and diuretic; laxative, expectorant and demulcent (seeds); laxative and tonic, anti-inflammatory and anthelmintic (plant); analgesic (fixed oil); diuretic and for leprosy (roots). 

Velvet bean Kapikacchu Mucuna prurience

 It is famous for its aphrodisiac property. It lowers stress, reduces anxiety, improves focus, boosts libido and elevates mood. It has effects on central & peripheral nervous system. It is itchy to touch due to serotonin on its surface. It is effective in the treatment of many neuro-muscular diseases especially in Parkinsonism. 

Puncture vine   Gokshura/ Thrikantaka

 

Tribulus terrestris

 It is useful in diseases such as hormonal imbalance, sexual problems, heart problems, kidney problems and various skin diseases. It helps in reducing blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

Indian dill Sathaahwa

 

Anethum sowa Roxb.exFlem

It is advised in the treatment of abdominal colic, diarrhoea, fever, wounds and eye diseases.

It is used as an ingredient in gripe water, given to relieve colic pain in babies and flatulence in young children. The seed is aromatic, carminative, mildly diuretic, galactagogue, stimulant and stomachic.  The essential oil in the seed relieves intestinal spasms and griping, helping to settle colic. The carminative volatile oil improves appetite, relieves gas and aids digestion. Chewing the seeds improves bad breath. Anethum stimulates milk flow in lactating mothers, and is often given to cattle for this reason. It also cures urinary complaints, piles and mental disorders. 

asafoetida Hingu Ferula asafoetida Linn

  It has antispasmodic, carminative, expectorant, laxative, and sedative. The volatile oil in the gum is eliminated through the lungs, making this an excellent treatment for asthma. The odor of asafoetida is imparted to the breath, secretions, flatus, and gastric eruptions. Its properties are antispasmodic, expectorant, stimulant, emmenagogue and vermifuge. It also thins the blood and lowers blood pressure. It is widely used in India in food and medicine. 

Spanish chamomile Akallaka/Akarakarabha Anacyclus pyrethrum

 The plant is used as sex stimulant, antidiabetic, diuretic, carminative, aphrodisiac, antioxidant, treating asthma, cardiac diseases, and throat problems. It removes laziness, nerve weakness etc. It is used in stomach-ache, arthritis, sciatica, tooth and gum problems, hiccoughs, epilepsy, headache, pains, (muscle relaxant), worm infestation etc.

Utanjana Utimgana Blepharis edulis

 It has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic, antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-ulcer and cytotoxic activities.

Spreading hogweed Vrischeeva/Punarnava Boerhavia diffusa

(Sweta & Rakta varieties)

The name Punarnava means it has the capability to repair and regenerate itself. It does the same function in our body also. It is an important anti-inflammatory medicinal herb well known for its diuretic and antioedematous properties. Here it works as a diuretic, by balancing the water retention at the same time helping to reduce oedema in the visceral organs being beneficial in ascites, splenomegaly etc. It can eliminate the unwanted fluid collected in tissues and reduce swelling and thereby reverse inflammation. 

Lodh tree/ Symplocos Lodhra/ Pachotti Symplocos racemosa Roxb.

 It has wound healing, anti-diabetic, and hepato-protective properties. It is good for eyes, and a uterine tonic. It alleviates Kapha, Rakta & Pitta. It is used to treat eye diseases, skin diseases, fever, swelling, herpes, Diarrhoea & dysentery. It is recommended in many gynecological issues, especially frequent abortions.

Fire flame bush Dhaataki Woodfordia fruiticosa Kurtz

 It is an anthelmintic, in dysentery, leprosy, blood diseases, leucorrhoea, and menorrhagia.

 Makshikadhatu(Copper pyrite)

Details of the manufacturing

 As already discussed, Kumaryasavam has 40 herbal ingredients, honey,purified iron bhasma, copper pyrite,  and jaggery.

All herbal ingredients should be washed well and dried up in shade.

 

Take  16 Prastha Kumaripatraswarasa in an earthen pot coated inside with ghee.

Add

 one Tulam of jaggery,

 ½ Tulam of honey,

½ Tula of purifies iron bhasma

8 Pala of Dhataki

 

And

Mix it well. Cover it with a clean white cloth and keep it closed and airtight. Keep it for 30 days in a dark place with low temperature. After 30 days, open it and filter through a clean white cloth. Keep it in an airtight glass bottle. Asavam can be used for a longer period of time without any preservatives.

Dosha Dooshya Predominance with roga margas.

Kumaryasavam is Kapha-Vaatahara and brumhana.

It acts on aabhyantara and bahya rogamargas.

 Dosage and Usage of Kumaryasava

Dosage: 25-30 ml after food

Usage:

Arishtam is advised to be taken after food, once the ingested food and arishtam will digest together.

It is taken two times or three times a day immediately after food.

 In the text, it is described it should be consumed according to body build & age. The dose may be ½ or 1 or 2 Pala.

 Exercises and Yoga.

As Kumaryasava targets mainly digestion and immunity, following regular exercises and specific yoga asanas like pavanamuktasana, vajrasana, bhujangasana etc for lower back and abdomen recommended.

Regular exercise helps improve the bioavailability of the medicine and food ingested and leads to positive health.

Yoga can maintain harmony within and with surroundings.

All the exercises and physical exertions must be decided and done under the supervision of a medical expert only.

Recommended diet and behaviour

Diet:

  • To be avoided

Heavy meals and difficult to digest foods – cause indigestion.

junk foods- cause disturbance in digestion and reduces the bioavailability of the medicine

carbonated drinks – makes the stomach more acidic and disturbed digeastion

refrigerated and frozen foods – causes weak and sluggish digestion by weakening agni (digestive fire)

curd – causes vidaaha and thereby many other diseases

  • To be added

Light meals and easily digestible foods

Green gram, soups, buttermilk boiled with turmeric, ginger and curry leaves

freshly cooked and warm food processed with cumin seeds, ginger, black pepper, ajwain etc

 Behaviour:

Better to avoid exposure to excessive sunlight wind rain or dust.

Avoid lifting heavy weights and other vigorous physical activities.

Maintain a regular food and sleep schedule.

Avoid sitting continuously for a long time and avoid squatting.

Side effects and contraindications

No known side effects reported.

Diabetic people and people with a gastric ulcers should not take arishta-asavas.

As it contains iron, some persons may develop discomforts like constipation.
