Fatty liver is the condition in which excess fat builds up in the liver. It is also known as hepatic steatosis. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and alcoholic fatty liver disease are the two types of fatty liver.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF FATTY LIVER 

  • Generally no symptoms
  • If fat deposits become excess, the following symptoms are manifested;
  • Right abdominal pain
  • Fatigue

 CAUSES OF FATTY LIVER 

  • Diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • Alcohol
  • Certain medications
  • Other metabolic diseases
  • Hepatitis
  • Malnutrition
  • Obesity
  • Celiac disease
  • Inflammatory bowel disease

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF FATTY LIVER 

Due to the above-mentioned causes, there is an accumulation of fat in the liver. When it progresses, the size of the vacuoles (liposomes) increases, pushing the nucleus (microvesicular fatty change) to the periphery of the cell. Large vacuoles may convert into fatty cysts, which are irreversible lesions.

 DIAGNOSIS OF FATTY LIVER 

  • Liver function tests
  • Alanine aminotransferase test (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase test (AST)
  • Low-density lipoprotein (LDL)
  • High-density lipoprotein (HDL)
  • Total cholesterol
  • Triglycerides
  • Blood glucose level
  • USG scan
  • CT scan

TREATMENTS FOR FATTY LIVER 

  • Physical exercise
  • Diet modifications
  • Treatment of underlying pathology
  • In severe cases liver transplantation
  • The most important part of treating alcohol-related fatty liver disease is to stop alcohol.

PROGNOSIS OF FATTY LIVER 

  • Fatty liver is manageable with life modifications and medications. Untreated fatty liver leads to complications.

COMPLICATIONS OF FATTY LIVER 

  • Liver cancer
  • Fibrosis of liver

FATTY LIVER AND AYURVEDA

  • In Ayurveda, fatty liver is caused due to the ‘medo vridhi’. It is treated based on the management of ‘yakrit roga’ and ‘medo roga’.

NIDANA- AYURVEDIC CAUSES OF FATTY LIVER 

  • Excess consumption of unctuous, heavy, oily food
  • Dysfunction of agni
  • Lack of vyayama (physical activities)
  • Sedentary lifestyle

PURVAROOPAM- AYURVEDIC PREMONITORY SYMPTOMS OF FATTY LIVER 

  • No premonitory symptoms for fatty liver

  • Avoid food items that produce dosha imbalance like unctuous, oily, and hard to digest. Because dosha imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Consume easily digestible food items
  • Avoid consumption of alcohol
  • Avoid smoking

YOGA FOR FATTY LIVER 

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam – relaxes the body and mind

 

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
