SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HIGH URIC ACID

  • Generally asymptomatic
  • Symptoms of calculi when it is formed in the kidney, bladder
  • In the case of gout, the following symptoms are present;
  • Sudden severe pain.
  • Pain manifested in almost all joints.
  • It is commonly experienced in the base of the big toe.
  • Pain aggravated during body movement.
  • Swelling
  • Redness

CAUSES OF HIGH URIC ACID

  • Genetic predisposition
  • Certain medications
  • Chemotherapy
  • Alcohol
  • Diuretics
  • Vitamin B3
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Purine-rich diet
  • Kidney diseases
  • Metabolic diseases like diabetes

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF HIGH URIC ACID

Hyperuricemia (typically defined as serum urate concentration >6.8 mg/dL) is a common and necessary pathogenic factor in the development of gout. In this kidneys don’t eliminate uric acid efficiently. Things that may cause this slow-down in the removal of uric acid like the above-said causes. The accumulation of urate crystals in the joints causes inflammation.

DIAGNOSIS OF HIGH URIC ACID

  • Laboratory tests – to find out the underlying pathology
  • Uric acid value in blood- Normal Uric acid levels are 2.4-6.0 mg/dL (female) and 3.4-7.0 mg/dL (male)

TREATMENTS FOR HIGH URIC ACID

  • Medications – Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, Analgesics (In the case of joint inflammation like gouty arthritis)
  • Treatment of underlying pathology
  • Uric acid-reducing agents

PROGNOSIS OF HIGH URIC ACID

  • Prognosis is based on the stage of the disease, duration and condition of the patient

COMPLICATIONS OF HIGH URIC ACID

  • Stiffened joint
  • Permanent damage of joint
  • Unable to do any movement
  • Cardiovascular diseases
  • Kidney diseases

HIGH URIC ACID AND AYURVEDA

  • In Ayurveda, high uric acid can be treated based on the management of ‘vataraktha’and ‘asmari’.
  • Vata vyadhi can be correlated to neurological or neuromuscular disorders. The causes and pathogenesis of diseases caused by vitiation of Vata dosha, in general, are the exclusive cause and pathogenesis of pain, numbness, weakness.
  • Vata dosha and asthi dhatu are involved in case of gouty arthritis.

NIDANA- AYURVEDIC CAUSES OF HIGH URIC ACID

  • Excess consumption of ununctuous, cold, unwholesome food
  • Vitiation of pitta and raktha
  • Excessive physical exercise.
  • Suppression of natural urges.
  • Asthi dhatu kashaya – degeneration of bone tissue

PURVAROOPAM- AYURVEDIC PREMONITORY SYMPTOMS OF HIGH URIC ACID

  • Sudden sharp pain in the joints

SAMPRAPTI – AYURVEDIC PATHOGENESIS OF HIGH URIC ACID

  • Vata, pitta and kapha dosha move through all channels of circulation. Due to the subtle nature of vata it impels the remaining two doshas.
  • The aggravated vata having provoked these two doshas, exacerbated and fills up the empty channels and moves greatly inside them or by getting enveloped by the other doshas.
  • The aggravated vata resides in the joints and produces different kinds of aches and pains.
  • If these doshas accumulated in the bladder with the predominance of kapha produces asmari (calculi)

LAKSHANA- AYURVEDIC SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HIGH URIC ACID

  • Ruk – Pain on the joints
  • Redness on joints
  • Pain aggravates on movement
  • Sopha – edema
