Huntington’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease. It is also known as Huntington’s chorea. Chorea is a movement problem that occurs in different diseases. The Greek word chorea means dance. Abnormal involuntary movements of muscles are the major symptoms.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HUNTINGTON’S DISEASE

  • Irregular movements which are unpredictable
  • Non-stereotyped movements.
  • Walking may become difficult
  • Severe chorea is referred to as ballismus.
  • Muscle spasm
  • Mental confusion
  • Loss of concentration
  • Tremor
  • Difficulty in speaking
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Hallucination
  • Delirium

CAUSES OF HUNTINGTON’S DISEASE

  • Huntington’s disease is an autosomal dominant disorder – genetic factors

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF HUNTINGTON’S DISEASE

In diseases with well-defined neuropathology, Huntington’s disease has been associated with abnormalities in the caudate nucleus. Here the level of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) decreases.

DIAGNOSIS OF HUNTINGTON’S DISEASE

  • Huntington’s disease diagnosed by proper history taking and clinical symptoms
  • Neurological examinations
  • Genetic testing
  • For Huntington’s disease, imaging studies, such as MRI scans, can show brain activity that’s an indicator of the disease.

TREATMENTS FOR HUNTINGTON’S DISEASE

  • Atypical neuroleptics include risperidone, olanzapine, clozapine, and quetiapine.
  • GABAergic drugs, such as clonazepam, gabapentin, and valproate, can be used as adjunctive therapy.

PROGNOSIS OF HUNTINGTON’S DISEASE

  • Prognosis is based on the degree of the symptoms, duration and condition of the patient.
  • Huntington’s disease is generally progressive, and ultimately, fatal disease.

COMPLICATIONS OF HUNTINGTON’S DISEASE

  • The abnormal involuntary movements may cause local trauma in some patients.
  • The swallowing difficulties
  • Tongue dystonia
  • Patients may cause aspiration pneumonia

HUNTINGTON’S DISEASE AND AYURVEDA

  • In Ayurveda, Huntington’s disease falls under Vatavyadhi or a Vata dosha imbalance disorder.
  • Vata vyadhi can be correlated to neurological or neuromuscular disorders. The causes and pathogenesis of diseases caused by vitiation of Vata dosha, in general, are the exclusive cause and pathogenesis ofkampa (tremor, involuntary movements).

NIDANA- AYURVEDIC CAUSES OF HUNTINGTON’S DISEASE

  • Janmakrita – genetic factors
  • Excess consumption of ununctuous, cold food
  • Excessive physical exercise.
  • Suppression of natural urges.
  • Trauma
  • Injuries

Mild involuntary movements on the body are manifested particularly on hands.

SAMPRAPTI – AYURVEDIC PATHOGENESIS OF HUNTINGTON’S DISEASE

  • Beejadushti and madhuraharavihara lead to delayed developments of sensory and motor property. Shareerikaand manasikanidana does further vataprakopa lead to karshya, mamsashosha, shakrutgraha, indriyabramsha, arthavakshaya.
  • These vikaras further aggravating vata lead to udavartha.
  • On the other side aggravation vata vitiated Snayu ,sira, kandara lead to shoola, aakshepaka, kampa.

  • Kampa – involuntary movements
  • Sada – weakness
  • Sosha – atrophy of muscles

DIET AND BEHAVIOUR FOR HUNTINGTON’S DISEASE

  • Avoid food items that produce vata dosha imbalance like cold and dry food, hard to digest. Because vata imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Consume easily digestible food items, cow’s milk
  • Avoid heavy exercises which further aggravate the conditions.
  • Oil massage on affected area advised. Which alleviates vata dosha
  • Take proper rest.

YOGA FOR HUNTINGTON’S DISEASE

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam – calms the mind and gets control over involuntary movements

 The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
