Introduction
- The world has become a lot better place for the people who are smart & confident. Soft skills & smart ways of communication have a lot of impact on a career than mere academic excellence. In contrary to high scores in exams, young candidates face a lack of self-confidence. Most people, in any of their life situations, have gone through a doubtful and intimidating moment about themselves. But it becomes a disease and needs treatment when the person is not able to handle the situation & the lack of self-confidence becomes chronic & severe. Both physiological & psychological factors can be blamed for this issue.
Signs & symptoms
Talking less about own looks, skills etc.
Ashamed to face people
Avoiding gatherings and stage performances
Less talkative, negative talks
At times physical manifestations like headache, giddiness, palpitations, cardiac arrhythmia etc. can also accompany the problem.
Causes
Mostly the causes are psychological. Like,
Unsupportive parents or caretakers, history of a bad childhood
Badly influencing friendships or relationships
Stressful life events like exam failure or divorce
Trauma – physical/mental like acid attacks
Sexual abuse – e.g., rape
Mood disorders, depression
Bullying/loneliness
In some chronic conditions like AIDS, Cancer, the person can feel lack of self-confidence.
Pathophysiology
The exact pathophysiology of lack of self-confidence is not known yet. Scientists hypothesised that chemical and electrical changes in the brain can cause boosting up of self-esteem. They found that people who had greater fluctuations in self-esteem during a social task also had lower self-esteem more generally and reported more symptoms of depression and anxiety. People in this group showed increased prediction error responses in a part of the brain called the insula, which was strongly coupled to activity in the part of the prefrontal cortex that explained changes in self-esteem.
Diagnosis
As the problem is very subjective, no specific diagnostic test can help for the confirmation.
Signs like
Lack of motivation
Reluctance to do new things
Negative talks
Not accepting credits for any activity etc
Along with thorough psychiatric evaluation by a professional can be helpful in diagnosis.
In some cases, with an underlying clinical condition like chronic anaemia, AIDS, Carcinoma etc, diagnostic tests for the disease are advised.
Treatments
As it is a chronic condition, the treatment has some limitations. It will be effective only the patient is willing to accept and grow himself. The treatment to improve self confidence includes:
Counselling
Cognitive behaviour therapy
Medications like SSRIs (Prozac, Celexa, Zoloft, Paxil, etc.
Prognosis
The prognosis is usually good if the patient is co-operative.
Complications
Anxiety neurosis
Depression
Suicidal tendency
Poor social & family relationships
Disease & Ayurveda
All problems related to the mind are attributed with the name manoroga or unmada in Ayurveda. As the thridoshas cause the diseases of both body and mind, manorogas also come under the doshic vitiation of them. Other than very important bodily functions, Vaata controls the mind & thoughts too. Lack of self-confidence happens when there is Vaatakopa which deviates stability. It is seen mostly in Vaata prakruti people who are highly energetic but lacks confidence.
