SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF TINNITUS

The following types of noises are experienced by the person with tinnitus.

  • Humming noise
  • Buzzing noise
  • Ringing

CAUSES OF TINNITUS

  • Ear wax
  • Ear infection
  • Defects in the ear ossicles
  • The perforated or defective eardrum
  • Dysfunction of the inner ear
  • Injury to auditory nerve or brain
  • Head injuries
  • Neck injuries
  • Certain medications

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF TINNITUS

Tinnitus generally associated with hearing loss. Conductive deafness is occurring when there is any defect in the conduction of sound vibrations. It mainly occurs due to defects in-ear ossicles. In the sensorineural hearing loss, damage occurs in hair cells in the inner ear, auditory nerve, brain etc.

  • Automated auditory brain response
  • Rinnes and webers test

PROGNOSIS OF TINNITUS

  • Prognosis is based on the cause of tinnitus, duration and condition of the patient

TINNITUS AND AYURVEDA

  • In Ayurveda, tinnitus is called ‘karna nada’ it is also associated with “badhirya”

NIDANA- AYURVEDIC CAUSES OF TINNITUS

  • Excess consumption of ununctuous, cold, dry food
  • Excess vitiation of doshas
  • Agantu factors – infection
  • Water trapped in the ear
  • Injuries
  • Pratishyaya (Rhinitis)
  • Avashyaya (Exposure to cold wind currents)
  • Jalakreeda (Swimming)
  • Karna Kanduyana (constant rubbing or irritating the ear with the finger or any other instruments)

PURVAROOPAM- AYURVEDIC PREMONITORY SYMPTOMS OF TINNITUS

  • Ringing noise (nada) experienced in the ear

SAMPRAPTI – AYURVEDIC PATHOGENESIS OF TINNITUS

  • Vata, pitta and kapha dosha move through all channels of circulation. Due to the subtle nature of vata it impels the remaining two doshas.
  • The aggravated vata having provoked these two doshas, exacerbated and fills up the empty channels and moves greatly inside them or by getting enveloped by the other doshas.
  • The aggravated doshas reside in the ear and produce different kinds of diseases including karna nada.

  • Ringing noise heard by one or both ear

  • Prognosis is based on the nidana of karna nada and associated diseases

HOME REMEDIES FOR TINNITUS

  • Mild heat application around the ear by a towel dipped with hot water
  • Massage around the ear ( NOT too much pressure )
  • Clear the wax

DIET AND BEHAVIOUR FOR TINNITUS

  • Avoid food items that produce vata dosha imbalance like cold and dry food, hard to digest. Because vata imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Consume easily digestible food items
  • Avoid heavy exercises which further aggravate the vata dosha.
  • Oil massage on the head is advised. Which alleviates vata dosha

YOGA FOR TINNITUS

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam – calms the mind and  sharpens the hearing

 

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
