SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF COOLEY’S ANEMIA
- Fatigue
- Yellow discolouration in the skin
- Pallor
- Anaemia
- Shortness of breath
- Dark urine
- Slow growth
CAUSES OF COOLEY’S ANEMIA
- Gene mutations
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF COOLEY’S ANEMIA
In the case of thalassemia mutations occur in the gene that makes haemoglobin. This causes impaired production of one type of globin chain (alpha chain in alpha thalassemia and beta chain in beta-thalassemia ). Cooley’s anaemia is a type of beta-thalassemia major. Unpaired chains cause problems with RBC production and maturation leads to haemolytic anaemia.
DIAGNOSIS OF COOLEY’S ANEMIA
- Complete blood count
- Haemoglobin count
- Prenatal testing – chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis
TREATMENTS FOR COOLEY’S ANEMIA
- Blood transfusion
- Stem cell transplant
- Iron chelation therapy
PROGNOSIS OF COOLEY’S ANEMIA
- Prognosis is based on the type and severity of thalassemia. Some people with beta-thalassemia intermedia and major (cooley’s anaemia) can be cured with a stem cell transplant.
COMPLICATIONS OF COOLEY’S ANEMIA
- Iron overload
- Spleen enlargement
- Heart problems
- Bone deformities
COOLEY’S ANEMIA AND AYURVEDA
- In Ayurveda, cooley’s anaemia is considered as ‘beeja dushtajanya pandu roga’.

LAKSHANA- AYURVEDIC SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF COOLEY’S ANEMIA
- Haaridra netra twak – yellow discolouration of eyes, skin
- Vivarna mutratha – dark urine
- Pandu – anaemia

AYURVEDIC PROGNOSIS OF COOLEY’S ANEMIA
- The symptoms are managed by adopting treatment for pandu, yakrit roga, pleeha roga and rakta sodhana (blood purification).
CHIKITSA- AYURVEDIC TREATMENT FOR COOLEY’S ANEMIA
AYURVEDIC SAMANA TREATMENT FOR COOLEY’S ANEMIA

YOGA FOR COOLEY’S ANEMIA
- Nadi Shuddi Pranayam – refresh the body and mind
The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, and the body relaxed. The patient has to close one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
