VIRATARADI KASHAYAMis an Ayurvedic medicine for treating urinary tract disorders. It also helps to treat urinary calculi and urination associated with pain and burning sensation.

 

Benefits of Veerataradi kashayam

 

VIRATARADI KASHAYAM is used in acute pain and distension of lower abdomen, associated with urinary tract infection. As it clears the urinary channels, it is beneficial in some cases of renal disorders.

It is said that it is useful in Vaatika diseases. It corrects apaanavaata and normalises urination and excretion. It is used in the treatment of hernia, hydrocoele and prostratomegaly. It is found useful in some tumours and cysts in the urinary and seminal passages.

It is beneficial in renal and bladder stones.

Ingredients of Veerataradi kashayam

 

 

Sicklebush Vellantara or Veerataru Dichrostachys cinerea (L.) Wight & Arn.

 

It can be used in dysuria, calculi, osteo-arthritis, and other Vaata vyadhis(diseases of nervous system and locomotory system)

 

Headache tree    Agnimantha/ Arani

 

Premna integrifolia Linn.

 

It has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antinociceptive, anti-arthritic, anti-bacterial, anti-cancerous, anti-microbial, anthelmintic, immuno-modulatory, hypoglycaemic, neuro-protective and anti-ulcer properties. It is CNS depressant, Cardiac stimulant, and cardio-protective.

 

 

 

Yellow gentian, Hellebore  

Katuka

Picrorhiza kurroa

 

It is used for Dyspepsia, fever and in purgatives. Although it shows anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory activities, it is most valued for its hepatoprotective effect.

 

 

 

Adathoda, Malabar nut Vrisha Justicia adathoda L.

 

 

It is an expectorant and is mostly used in respiratory conditions. It helps in treatment of skin diseases. It is also used in jaundice, fevers, headache and urinary infections.

 

Elephants ears Asmabheda Bergenia pacumbis (Buch.-Ham.ex D.Don.)

 

It is famous diuretic and cleansing the urine. It is widely used in bladder & urinary calculi.

 

Puncture vine   Gokantaka

 

Tribulus terrestris

 

It is useful in diseases such as hormonal imbalance, sexual problems, heart problems, kidney problems and various skin diseases. It helps in reducing blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

 

 

Spiney sesbania Ilkata Sesbania bispinosa W.F. Wight

 

It is a diuretic and galactagogue. It can be used in urinary tract diseases and renal calculi.

 

 

Strobilanthes Sahachara Nilgirianthus ciliatus(Nees) Bremek /Strobilanthes ciliatus Nees.

 

It is used in neurological disorders, sciatica, glandular swellings and oedema.

 

Wild indigo/Purple tephrosia Sarapunkha/ Baana Tephrosia purpurea

 

It is used to treat hepatic disorders, splenomegaly, Pain and distension of abdomen, ulcerations and wounds, poisons & toxins. Being Tikta rasa and laghu, it is beneficial in cough & cold, fever and asthma.

 

 

Kans grass Kasa Saccharum spontaneum L.

 

 

It is nourishing, soothing, improves strength, aphrodisiac, relieves fatigue & lethargy. It can be used in malnourishment, bleeding disorders, dysuria, kidney & bladder calculi, burning sensation, bleeding piles, excessive uterine bleeding etc.

 

Mistletoe Vrishadani Dendrophthoe falcata (L.f.) Ettingsh.

 

It causes constipation. It is diuretic, rejuvenating, aphrodisiac, wound-healing, good for eyes, and helps to stabilise foetus/pregnancy. It is useful in the treatment of exhaustion, fistula in ano, hiccups, renal & urinary diseases, bleeding disorders, calculi, wounds, ulcers, parasites etc.

 

Pin red grass Nala Saccharum munja Roxb.

 

 

It is a coolant and tonic. It can be used in the treatment of fever, inflammation, dysuria, giddiness, vertigo, and bleeding wounds. It improves breast milk in lactating women.

 

 

 

Cogongrass/ alang-alang Kusa Imperata cylindrica (L.) Beauv.   

 

It is astringent, anti-pyretic, diuretic haemostatic, restorative, rejuvenative and tonic. It can be used in urinary tract infection, dysuria, burning sensation, excess thirst, bleeding disordxers etc.

 

Halfa grass/ salt reed-grass Darbha Dsmostachia bipinnata Stapf.

 

It is a coolant. Used in the treatment of heroes, burning sensation, leucorrhoea, excess thirst, urinary infection, urinary calculus and diseases of urinary bladder.

 

Cattail Gundra/ Guccha

 

Typha elephantina Roxb. /Typha angustata Bory & Chaub.

 

It is a diuretic, aphrodisiac and galactagogue. It is used in the treatment of boils, wounds, burns, scab disorders, bacterial infections, blood clotting disorders, cystitis, leprosy, strangury, and splenic enlargement. Moreover, the plant is also reported to have various therapeutic activities including membrane stabilizing potential, anthelmintic, thrombolytic, antioxidant, wound healing, anxiolytic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and cytotoxic activities.

 

Indian trumpet flower  Bhalluka Oroxylum indicum

 

It has anti-microbial, anti-diabetic, hepato-protective, anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic, immune-modulatory, nephro-protective, and cardio-protective properties.

 

Rajmahal hemp Morata

 

Marsdenia tenacissima(Roxb.)Moon.

 

It is anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory. It is used in the treatment of abscesses, asthma, bronchitis, tonsillitis, cystitis, skin diseases, pneumonia etc. It is effective in food and drug poisoning. It is an anti-cancerous drug.

 

 

Trellis vine Kurootaka Pergularia daemia

 

The whole plant is used as an anthelmintic, antiseptic, antivenin, emmenagogue, emetic expectorant and expectorant. Extract of this plant is taken orally for gastric ulcers, uterine and menstrual complaints. The leaves are useful in leprosy and haemorrhoids. The fresh, pulped leaves are applied as a poultice to relieve carbuncles. Leaf juice is used in amenorrhea, catarrhal infections and dysmenorrhea, infantile diarrhoea and also used to reduce body pain. Dried leaves are used as an antirheumatic and used in asthma, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, bronchitis, whooping cough, heals cuts and wounds and finally to facilitate parturition. The stem bark of this plant is a good remedy for cold, it is also used to treat malaria and the twig is used as an antipyretic and appetizer. Dried roots are used as an abortifacient, emetic, bronchitis and used for cough, asthma and constipation, while the fresh roots used as an abortifacient and used to treat gonorrhoea.

 

Plantain Kadali/Rambha Musa paradisiaca

 

It is a coolant and appetiser at the same time. It increases intestinal motility. It arrests bleeding. Being a rich source of anti-oxidants, it can be used in the treatment of gastric ulcer, dysentery & diarrhoea, bleeding disorders etc.

 

 

Arjun tree Partha

 

Terminalia arjuna.W.&A.

 

It is an anti-oxidant, hypotensive, anti-atherogenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic, anti-mutagenic, and gastroprotective. It is used in combination medicines for reducing Hypertension.

 

 

 

 

Details of the manufacturing

 

As already discussed, VIRATARADI KASHAYAMis prepared using 20 ingredients in equal quantity.

All these ingredients should be washed well and dried up in shade.

Take the prescribed herbs in dried & crushed form in an earthen pot. Now add 16 times clean water into it. Make it boil and then cook in the open vessel with low fire. Reduce the quantity into one by eighth of the initial quantity. Make sure to mix it in between with a ladle. Also, the fire should be kept low to make sure that all the active ingredients in the herbs needed are absorbed well into the water. Once the quantity is reduced to one by eighth of the initial amount of water, remove the vessel from the fire. Squeeze and drain through a clean white cloth. Collect the decoction in a clean vessel and discard the solid waste. Drink the mild warm decoction.

Dosage and Usage of Veerataradi kashayam

Dosage: two Pala.

Usage:

Kashayam is advised to take in empty stomach, once the ingested food is digested well and aahaararasa is formed well.

Usage of kashayam with prescribed prakshepadravyas according to the condition of disease and the patient gives the best results mostly.

 

Exercises and Yoga.

As VIRATARADI KASHAYAM targets mainly urinary tract disorders, only mild exercises are advised. Also, specific yogacharya including nadisuddhi pranayama, is recommended.

In persons with fever and severe urinary tract infections, physical exercises are not recommended.

Regular exercise after regaining normal health helps improve bioavailability of the food ingested and leads to positive health.

Yoga can maintain harmony within the body and with the surrounding system.

All the exercises and physical exertions must be decided and done under the supervision of a medical expert only.

Recommended diet and behaviour

Diet:

  • To be avoided

Hot, spicy and pungent food items

Pickles, processed and tinned masala items.

Heavy meals and difficult to digest foods – cause indigestion.

junk foods- cause disturbance in digestion and reduces the bioavailability of the medicine

carbonated drinks – makes the stomach more acidic and disturbed digestion

refrigerated and frozen foods – causes weak and sluggish digestion by weakening Agni (digestive fire)

curd – causes vidaaha and thereby many other diseases

Light meals and easily digestible foods

Green gram, soups, fresh juices, Indian sarsaparilla, tender coconut water, sugar cane, and arrowroot.

freshly cooked and warm food processed with coriander seeds, cumin seeds, ginger, ajwain etc

 

Behaviour:

Drink enough water and void urine frequently.

Maintain personal hygiene, especially private parts. Avoid using public toilets, using wet undergarments etc.

Protect yourself from dehydration and exposure to heat.

Better to avoid exposure to excessive sunlight, wind, rain or dust.

Maintain a regular food and sleep schedule.

Avoid holding or forcing the urges like urine, faeces, cough, sneeze etc.
