CAUSES OF CELLULITIS
Streptococcus and staphylococcus bacteria are most likely to enter disrupted areas of skin.
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF CELLULITIS
When the bacteria invade the skin, it overwhelms the defensive cells (neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, and mast cells) that produce inflammatory changes. As cellulitis progresses, the bacteria invade tissue around the wound.
DIAGNOSIS OF CELLULITIS
- Total WBC count
- Gram stain and culture of fluid from the wound
- Culturing of biopsy
- ESR
- “Touch” preparation — skin lesion specimen touched to microscopic slide; application of KOH; examination for yeast and fungus
TREATMENTS OF CELLULITIS
- Penicillin (drug of choice for initial treatment)
- Analgesics
- Anti-inflammatory drugs
- Antifungal medications
- Elevation of the infected extremity
- Warm soaks to the site to help relieve pain and decrease oedema by increasing vasodilation
PROGNOSIS OF CELLULITIS
Generally curable on antibiotic therapy and the symptoms are manageable.
COMPLICATIONS OF CELLULITIS
- Ruptured blisters are usually sensitive and painful
- Permanent damage of skin tissue if necrosis occurs

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
