Ayurvedic Treatment of Chalazion ensures non-recurrence of this eye disease.  Chalazion is a slow-growing small lump formed within the eyelid. It is also called tarsal or meibomian cyst. It is a chronic non-infective granulomatous inflammation of the meibomian gland.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF CHALAZION

  • Painless swelling in the lid
  • A feeling of mild heaviness
  • Eyelid redness

CAUSES OF CHALAZION

  • Habitual rubbing of the eyes
  • Habitual fingering of the lids and nose
  • Chronic blepharitis
  • Metabolic factors

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF CHALAZION

A mild grade infection of the meibomian gland occurs by organisms of very low virulence. Then proliferation of the epithelium and infiltration of the walls of the ducts occurs. Blockage of ducts leads to retention of secretions causing its enlargement.

DIAGNOSIS OF CHALAZION

  • Diagnosis is done by proper examination of the lump by the doctor

TREATMENTS OF CHALAZION

  • Topical antibiotics
  • Oral anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Intralesional injection of a long-acting steroid
  • Incision and curettage
  • Diathermy

 PROGNOSIS OF CHALAZION

Complete spontaneous resolution may occur rarely

COMPLICATIONS OF CHALAZION

  • A large chalazion in the upper lid may press on the cornea and cause blurred vision.
  • It may burst on the conjunctival side forming a fungating mass of granulation tissue
  • Secondary infections
  • Calcification may occur
  • Malignant change into meibomian gland

CHALAZION AND AYURVEDA

  • As per Ayurveda, it can be correlated with Utsangini that is sannipataja varmagata roga.
  • As per Sushruta samhita, features of Utsangini are bahyautsanga (swelling on lid), abhyantramukhi (opens on the conjunctival side).
  • According to Acharya Videha, kukkutandarasopmam srava is liberated on bursting of Utsangini .

NIDANA- AYURVEDIC CAUSES OF CHALAZION

  • Excess consumption of acrid, salt, hot, ununctuous food
  • Exposure to dust and smoke
  • Exposure to the warm environment

PURVAROOPAM- AYURVEDIC PREMONITORY SYMPTOMS OF CHALAZION

  • A small mass formed in the upper or lower eyelid

SAMPRAPTI – AYURVEDIC PATHOGENESIS OF CHALAZION

Due to the causes doshas get vitiated especially kapha. Doshas move through the channels of circulation to the eyes. Then it resides on the upper or lower eyelids and produces symptoms.

LAKSHANA – AYURVEDIC SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF CHALAZION

  • Cystic swelling resembling a fruit known as kola
  • Swelling opens in the conjunctival side
  • Lump is hard
  • Painless lump
  • Itching sensation
  • Does not suppurate

  • Avoid food items which produce dosha imbalance like hot, pungent, salty and dry food, hard to digest. Because dosha imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Consume easily digestible food items
  • Avoid exposure to sunlight
  • Avoid exposure to dust and smoke

 

YOGA FOR CHALAZION

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam – calms the mind and gets relief from the eye irritations associated with lump

 

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
