SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF URTICARIA

  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Swelling (wheals)
  • Most commonly occur in extremities and face

CAUSES OF URTICARIA

  • Allergy to certain food items like egg, shellfish, wheat products, peanut
  • Certain medications
  • Chemicals
  • Irritants
  • Stress
  • Scratching
  • Exposure to sunlight
  • Pollens
  • Insect bite
  • Increased body temperature

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF URTICARIA

In urticaria high levels of histamine and other chemical messengers to be released in the skin when exposing to the causative factors. These substances cause the blood vessels in the affected area of skin to open up and become leaky leads to redness and swelling.

DIAGNOSIS OF URTICARIA

·       Proper history taking

·       Physical examinations

·       ESR count

·       Liver function test

·       Thyroid function test

·       Other blood investigations to find out underlying pathology

TREATMENTS OF URTICARIA

·       Anti-inflammatory drugs

·       Antihistamines

·       Anti-itch medications 

PROGNOSIS OF URTICARIA

Acute urticaria is typically self-limited and resolves with proper avoidance of triggers.

  • Angioedema

  • In Ayurveda, treatment of urticaria is based on ‘Udarda chikilsa’.

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam – calms the mind and effective in stress-induced urticaria

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
