SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS of BULLOUS PEMPHIGOID
- Itching skin lesions
- The skin around the blisters that is normal or reddish

- Small blisters or sores in the mouth or other mucous membranes (benign mucous membrane pemphigoid)
CAUSES of BULLOUS PEMPHIGOID
- Generally cause is unknown
- People with other autoimmune disorders are found to be at a higher risk for developing pemphigoid.
- Radiation therapy
- Overuse of certain medications
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY of BULLOUS PEMPHIGOID
- Pemphigoid is an autoimmune disease.
- The immune system mistakenly begins to attack healthy tissues. In the case of pemphigoid, the immune system creates antibodies to attack the tissue just below the outer layer of skin.
- This causes the layers of skin to separate and results in painful blistering.
